MBBS in Australia

Medicine studies in Australia are gaining an annual increase of 15-20% each year. With the country providing a structured curriculum, world-class infrastructure, futuristic technologies, globally recognized degree, versatile teaching methods, and lavish lifestyle, migration to Australia for education purposes is gaining momentum. Hence it is not surprising that this is the dream destination among students but education for international students is really expensive in Australia. But with the quality of education and lifestyle, it has to offer to its students, it is worth investing. The students need to qualify UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) which is similar to MCAT conducted in USA & Canada.

With an amendment in 2004, Australian medical colleges have 2 two types of programs to offer

  1. For undergraduate medical degrees, the students are eligible to apply the completion of High School, the duration of which lasts for 5 to 6 years and the degree awarded is MBBS.
  2. For a graduate entry medical program the student is eligible to apply after graduation. The program lasts for 4 years and awards an MD degree.

Undergraduate Programs- MBBS in Australia

The duration of this course is 5-6years and involves in-depth theoretical studies followed by rigorous practical sessions implemented by Australian Quality Frameworks that work towards the quality of education. The degree is offered at selected medical schools and colleges in Australia and only a few seats are offered to international students. The two most popular schools that offer MBBS in Australia are the University of Adelaide and the University of New South Whales.  

Eligibility requirements for entry of international students to this course are –

  • A higher secondary qualification from a recognized board
  • Scoring a minimum of 7 bands in IELTS
  • NEET eligibility for Indian students is mandatory
  • The candidate should have attained the age of minimum of 17 years
  • The qualifying score in UMAT which is the entrance exam and basic requirement for entry into MBBS.

Graduate Medical Program- MD in Australia

MD is a four-year degree program in Australia and offered by almost all top medical schools in the country. Completion of an undergraduate medical degree is a mandatory requirement for entry into this program. Eligibility requirements for this program are

  • Bachelor degree certificate from a recognized university
  • UMAT/GMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admission Test)
  • A round of personal interview.

The medical schools in Australia have a common admission procedure for admission to the MBBS program. Both the graduate and undergraduate medical programs commence in the month of January for international students. Hence, the applications must be applied in September in the previous year. Any applications applied after September will be considered for the next academic session.

For instance, students willing to apply for January fall session 2020, must apply to the university latest by September 2019 to secure their seats for the medical program in Australia.
